Planning estimates vary with fabric, print, shrinkage, cutting technique, and project details.

How the estimate works

A clear row-by-row estimate

For each orientation, the calculator adds the seam allowance to both edges, removes the selvage loss from both sides of the roll, and works out how many pieces fit across one row. It then estimates the number of rows and compares the total lengths. Each plan keeps one orientation for all identical pieces; it does not mix orientations or optimize a cutting sequence across the roll.

With the example defaults, a 30 × 40 cm finished piece becomes a 33 × 43 cm cut piece. A 150 cm roll with 2 cm selvage loss per side has 146 cm usable width. Four pieces fit across, so 12 pieces need three 43 cm rows: 129 cm before 10% waste, or 141.9 cm recommended.

Core formulascut dimension = finished dimension + 2 × seam allowanceusable roll width = roll width − 2 × selvage loss per siderecommended length = row count × row length × (1 + waste%)

Common questions

Before you use the estimate

Why does the calculator compare two orientations?

Turning a rectangular piece 90° can let more pieces fit across the roll or shorten each cutting row. When rotation is enabled, both possible orientations are calculated and the lower estimated length is selected.

Does the result include a pattern repeat?

Yes. If you enter a vertical repeat, each cutting row is rounded upward to a whole repeat. Crosswise pattern alignment between pieces is not modeled.

Should I buy exactly the result?

Treat it as a planning estimate. Check the supplier's minimum cut increment and allow more fabric for shrinkage, print matching, defects, directional designs, or construction details.
